Psalm 119:86
All your commandments are sure; they persecute me with falsehood; help me. Psalm 119:86 ESV
I read Luke 18 earlier today and thought it was a good application of this verse.
Now he told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not give up. “There was a judge in a certain town who didn’t fear God or respect people. And a widow in that town kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’
“For a while he was unwilling, but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or respect people, yet because this widow keeps pestering me, I will give her justice, so that she doesn’t wear me out by her persistent coming.’”
Then the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. Will not God grant justice to his elect who cry out to him day and night? Will he delay helping them? I tell you that he will swiftly grant them justice. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” — Luke 18": 1-8 CSB
The psalmist appears to have a slight case of ADD in the verse. He starts out making a statement about the surety of God’s commands and quickly (mid-sentence) shifts to lamenting that he is being persecuted falsely by others.
The widow in Luke 18 seems to be holding to a similar truth in that she perseveres in God’s comment to knock and ask for justice even while being unjustly treated by her adversary and initially ignored by the judge. She persists in power of God’s character and the honesty of her position.
She does not hold back demanding (pestering) to be granted justice in the same way we should also call-out day and night to our Perfect Father in Heaven. If an unjust judge is willing to provide justice, would not our Father do much more for His children. The Psalmist writes, “I tell you that he will swiftly grant them justice.”
Are we also willing to put our faith into action like this poor widow, unjustly dealt with by her adversary? Are we willing to step out in faith, not based on our righteousness but on the character of God who is all, perfectly righteous.
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” – Matthew 17:20 ESV
If you find it difficult to step out in faith due to issues you carry from your past, consider reaching out to Burke Care. We could love to remind you of who God is and what His attributes are. We do not act in faith because of who we are, we act in faith because of who God says He is. Email Burke Care today at info@burkecare.org.
